Hard Places, 2018

Developed over the course of a year-long residency at the Florence Trust, London, this collection of works was the result of an intense period concentrating solely on the collage aspect of my practice. Drawing heavily from approaches to abstract painting and rooted in thinking about the problems of representing ‘blackness’ and the (female) body, these works are attempts to find alternative ways to do so. Home, comfort and escape became central themes as personal circumstances became an oppressive force throughout the making of the work. Through the process of making, the works became affirmations of the fluidity and flux of gender and identity, materialising into a proposition for a new way of being and thinking.
