Sound

Not Touching The Floor

2023

Soundscape- field recordings and percussion (36 mins), performed by Cherelle Sappleton.

Having engaged in several public events and drawing inspiration from walks through both historical and everyday locations in Barrow, Cherelle created a sound piece designed to alleviate stressed minds. Leveraging her expertise as a certified sound therapist, she applies the principles of sound therapy along with field recordings that capture the gentle cadence of bird songs, the ambient murmur of people conversing, and the joyful sounds of children playing. The aim of the work is to establish a connection with the listener, encouraging a slower pace and providing respite in times of heightened pressure and anxiety. It is her hope that the recording to prompt individuals to reflect on the meaningful aspects of life, allowing them to feel a sense of lightness compared to when they initially engaged with the piece.

Commissioned by Barrowfull for Barrow Music 2023.

(How) Do I Carry On?

2022

Sound installation (40-minute loop), 2022. Leatherette, salt, silver chalice, menstrual blood, tea tree oil, cedar & castor oil, various dimensions. Exhibited at Giant Gallery, Bournemouth, 2022.

A contemplation of George Floyd's tragic death and the role of motherhood for women of colour during a period of climate collapse and social turmoil. This project involves the artist's personal contribution of their menstrual blood, seen as both a tribute and inheritance from their forebears, engaging in a conversation with various found objects symbolizing purification and curative properties, all set against a backdrop of dissonant audio recordings blended with deep resonating bass tones.
